A method for producing dimethyl polyvinylphosphonate by anionic polymerization from a monomer component including dimethyl vinylphosphonate as a main component in the presence of an anionic polymerization initiator wherein the method for producing dimethyl polyvinylphosphonate is characterized by using an aliphatic ether as the polymerization solvent, and a method for producing polyvinylphosphonic acid characterized by hydrolyzing dimethyl polyvinylphosphonate obtained by this method in the presence of an acid make it possible to easily produce dimethyl polyvinylphosphonate of high molecular weight and controlled molecular weight and make it possible to produce polyvinylphosphonic acid of high molecular weight and controlled molecular weight corresponding to this dimethyl polyvinylphosphonate.
