A device and a method for checking function selection in an image forming apparatus are provided to inform a user whether a key button selected for controlling the operating state of the image forming apparatus is effective through a sound. A device for checking function selection in an image forming apparatus includes a controller(110) which checks an operation mode executed by the image forming apparatus when a key button is selected and outputs a set sound according to whether the selected key button is included in a key button list set for controlling the operation mode. The controller includes a storage unit(120) and a checking unit. The storage unit stores the key button list, sound data for generating sounds respectively set for key buttons included in the key button list, and error sound data for generating an error sound when a key button other than the key buttons included in the key button list is selected. The checking unit checks an operation mode executed by the image forming apparatus when a key button is selected, outputs a sound corresponding to sound data set for the selected key button, and outputs the error sound when the selected key button is not included in the key button list.
