The electrical system, consisting of an alternator (20) driven by the vehicle engine (22) and having an output voltage determined by an excitation circuit and rectified by a diode bridge (32), incorporates a circuit (28) that provides an excitation signal as a function of the alternator's speed of rotation. This ensures that the alternator provides, over the major part of its speed range, a voltage corresponding to its maximum output. The diode bridge rectifier is located between the alternator and a DC/DC converter (34).
