PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting unit capable of illuminating a design member provided on the exterior of a vehicle and another lighting target with a simpler configuration.SOLUTION: An exterior lighting unit comprises: a design plate 12 made of a translucent material and mounted on an external surface of a vehicle; an LED 18 for emitting light traveling in a direction substantially orthogonal to the surface of the design plate 12 toward an end part of the design plate 12; and light distribution mechanisms 16 provided at end parts of the design plate 12, for bending one portion of the light from the LED 18 in a direction of traveling on the inner surface of the design plate 12 and bending the other portion of the light from the LED 18 in a direction toward a licence plate 100 provided at a position different from the design plate 12.
