The present invention provides a system and method for the real-time, non-ionizing tracking of an implanted or inserted medical device. The invention comprises at least one RF tag attached to the medical device and a sensor array positioned external to the subject, where the sensor array powers the RF tag and receives a signal from the tag. Data from the sensor array is used to determine the 2D and 3D position and orientation of the RF tag.
