The invention relates to a method for operating a control unit (12) of a motor vehicle (10) during a parking phase (P), in which parking phase an ignition of the motor vehicle (10) is switched off in order to switch off units of the motor vehicle (10), wherein in the method an ignition-off signal (Z) sent out in order to initiate the parking phase (P) in the motor vehicle (10) is received by the control unit (12) and thereafter at least one electronic component (38) of the control unit (12) is switched off. The problem addressed by the invention is that of performing an update of operating software (60) of the control unit (12) without an interruption of operation of the control unit (12) that is disturbing to the user. After the ignition-off signal (Z) has been received, a processor core (48) and a memory device (52, 58), in which memory device the operating software (60) is stored, continue to be operated in the control unit (12).
