The invention relates to an apparatus 1 for recovering refrigerant from a cooling device. Apparatus 1 has a housing 10 having a housing inlet 11 adapted to be connected to a cooling device and an housing outlet 12; a heat exchanger 15 in the housing having an heat exchange inlet 16 and a heat exchange outlet 17; a compressor 30 having an inlet 31 connected to the housing outlet, and an outlet 32 connected to the heat exchange inlet; a condenser 40 having a condenser inlet 42 connected to heat exchange outlet and a condenser outlet 43; and an apparatus outlet 50 to deliver liquid refrigerant to a storage device. In use, with the housing inlet connected to a cooling device, operation of the compressor draws refrigerant in liquid form from the cooling device into the housing where it is heated by the heat exchanger to convert it to a low pressure vapour, and the vapour is drawn into the compressor inlet where it is compressed and heated by the compressor into a hot high pressure vapour and expelled through the compressor outlet into the heat exchange inlet to heat the heat exchanger, and the vapour from the heat exchanger is passed through the condenser inlet where it is liquefied, and liquefied refrigerant from the condenser outlet can be passed to a refrigerant storage device. |
