A reversing assistance system for a vehicle (100, Figure 8) coupled to a trailer (110, Figure 8) includes a camera 20, which may face towards the front, rear or a side of the vehicle or into the passenger compartment, and an image processor for processing images to detect a gesture and determine a command based on the gesture. The processor controls reversing of the trailer based on the command. The gesture may be a body motion indicating a sign; optionally the user may perform the gesture holding an identifiable object such as a smartphone 26. The user may be inside or outside the vehicle. Also disclosed is a trailer reversing assistance system operated using a conventional human machine interface, such as a knob, and a system which recognises and reacts to symbols on the display of smartphone 26. |
