A liquid crystal display device comprises: a first substrate which includes a plurality of pixels defined by crossing data lines with gate lines; a second substrate facing the first substrate; a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first and second substrates; a thin film transistor formed on the first substrate; a planarization layer formed to cover the thin film transistor; first and second electrodes which are formed on the first substrate, and operate the liquid crystal layer; a black matrix which is formed on the second substrate, and defines the pixels as a light blocking region and an opening region; and a bar-shaped spacer formed on the second substrate. The planarization layer includes one or more steps in a location corresponding to the bar-shaped spacer. The planarization layer formed on the first substrate includes the steps, thus the bar-shaped spacer is not in contact with an alignment layer even when the substrate is moved by an external force. Therefore, the liquid crystal device of the present invention prevents light leakage which can be generated when displaying a black image by preventing the alignment layer of the pixel region from being damaged. |
