A portable testing apparatus and method

A portable unit for performing tests on set top boxes (STB) or cable modems connected to cable TV based internet connections is disclosed. The portable tester would enable more extensive testing on site and reduce the need to return units to the lab for testing. Claims to a portable unit for testing network throughput by up/downloading test files using the cable modem are included. Downloaded files are discarded without saving. Claims to a portable unit including a signal generator and controllable attenuator to simulate the cable network connection for testing the performance of the cable modem are also present.
