<p>An adiabatic compressed air energy storage (ACAES) system comprising a compression stage 11, a thermal energy storage TES system 40 for removing and returning thermal energy to compressed air passing through it, a compressed air store 50, and a expansion stage 14. The ACAES system is configured to store thermal energy in a charging mode in which air is compressed in the first compression stage and passes through the first TES system so as to heat the store and to retrieve thermal energy in a discharging mode in which air passes back through the first TES system so as to cool the store for subsequent expansion in the expansion stage, preferably to produce electrical power. A pre-heater system 46 is provided upstream of the compression stage with respect to the charging mode, and is configured in the charging mode to preheat air entering the compression stage so as to increase the temperature of air entering the TES system.</p> |
