A router for broadband bonding is installed in a Local Area Network (LAN) using gratuitous (unsolicited) Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) messages. Devices in the LAN are configured to communicate with a default router using its IP address. When the bonding router is installed, it obtains the IP address of the default router, e.g. using DHCP, and then spoofs this address by regularly transmitting gratuitous ARP messages within the LAN. This causes the devices to associate the IP address of the default router with the link layer (MAC) address of the bonding router, such that packets sent by devices containing the network IP address of the default router will instead be directed to the bonding router. The bonding router then sends the packets over an aggregated link. The bonding router may create a static entry in its address translation table associating the IP address of the default router with its MAC address.
|
