A pipe 70 having a pipe wall 72 comprises a composite material formed of at least a matrix 74 and a plurality of reinforcing fibres 76 embedded within a matrix 74. The matrix 74 defines a continuous structure and the fibres 76 are variably distributed within the continuous matrix structure 74. The fibres 76 may be distributed radially throughout the continuous matrix 74 from zero at the region of the inner surface 78 of the pipe wall, and are increased in a direction towards the outer wall 80. The composite material may comprise a varying level of pre-stress between different regions of the pipe wall 72. The pre-stress may achieve a desired movement bias and/or alter a neutral position of strain. The modulus of the composite material may vary throughout the pipe wall 72. There may be a variation in construction of a circumferential and/or longitudinal section. The variation may be in distribution density of the fibres, type of fibre and/or fibre alignment angle. The pipe may be used in the extraction of hydrocarbons, as part of a riser, flow line and/or a jumper, at subsea and/or subterranean and/or for coupling end-to-end to a pipe comprising a pipe wall formed of metal. |
