Disclosed are a method and a system for providing a dictionary function, a recording medium, and a file distribution system. The method for providing a dictionary function comprises the following steps: executing a dictionary mode including a first area for receiving a search word and a second area for exposing a dictionary search result of the search word; and automatically converting the dictionary mode into a translation mode when a threshold level is extended as an input of the search word is extended in the first area. In the step of being automatically converted into the translation mode, the dictionary mod can be converted into the translation mode including a third area for receiving the extended search word as an original document of a translation target.
