Production of butanediol from a methane conversion process

Methods and systems are provided for converting methane in a feed stream to butanediol. The method includes processing acetylene as an intermediate stream to form a hydrocarbon stream including butanediol. A hydrocarbon stream is introduced into a supersonic reactor and pyrolyzed to convert at least a portion of the methane to acetylene. The reactor effluent stream is treated to convert acetylene to another hydrocarbon process. The method according to certain aspects includes controlling the level of carbon monoxide to prevent undesired reactions in downstream processing units.

1. A method for producing butanediol comprising:
introducing a feed stream comprising methane into a supersonic reactor; pyrolyzing the methane in the supersonic reactor to form a reactor effluent stream comprising acetylene in the range from 2 mol % to 30 mol %; passing the reactor effluent stream, including from about 15 mol % to about 95 mol % methane as a diluent, and a second stream comprising formaldehyde to a second reactor at second reaction conditions to form a second effluent stream comprising butyne diol and passing the second effluent stream to a hydrogenation reactor at hydrogenation reaction conditions to form a butanediol effluent stream.
