A biomass utilization apparatus comprising: a shaft-type pyrolytic furnace for thermally decomposing or partially oxidizing a biomass to produce a pyrolysis gas, a pyrolysis tar and a carbide and, at the same time, discharging the pyrolysis gas and the pyrolysis tar from the top of a furnace and also discharging the carbide from the bottom of the furnace; a pulverized coal firing boiler for firing a pulverized coal to produce a steam; and a pipework for feeding the pyrolysis gas and the pyrolysis tar from the shaft-type pyrolytic furnace into the pulverized coal firing boiler.
