PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a radar device of a phased array type and a method for controlling the radar device capable of preventing electrically adverse effects on a signal processing circuit even when a receiving antenna has received excessive reception power.SOLUTION: The radar device is of a phased array type comprising: a detection unit for detecting the reception intensity of the reception power of a reception signal received by a reception unit; an amplitude control unit for generating an amplitude control value for controlling the amplitude of a transmission signal transmitted by a transmission unit on the basis of the reception intensity detected by the detection unit and controlling the amplitude of the transmission signal by the generated amplitude control value; and a transmission unit for transmitting the transmission signal whose amplitude is controlled by the amplitude control unit.
