Aqueous compositions of carboxylic acids, carboxylate esters, and carboxylate salts are generally disclosed, including methods of using such compounds to make various polymers, including, but not limited to, polyesters, polyamides, and polycarbamates. In certain embodiments, the carboxylic acids, carboxylate esters, and carboxylate salts are derived from a renewable source, such as a natural oil.

1. An aqueous composition, the composition comprising:
water; and a compound of formula (I) wherein:
X1 is C12-36 alkylene, C12-24 alkenylene, C12-36 heteroalkylene, or C12-24 heteroalkenylene, each of which is optionally substituted one or more times by substituents selected independently from R3;R1 and R2 are independently —OH, —O—R4, or —O−Z+;R3 is a halogen atom, —OH, —NH2, oxo, C1-6 heteroalkyl, or C2-6 heteroalkenyl;R4 is C1-6 alkyl or C2-24 heteroalkyl, each of which is optionally substituted one or more times by —OH; and Z+ is a positively charged counterion; provided that at least one of R1 and R2 is not —OH.
