The invention relates to a method and network element that can be used to improve, in different aspects, existing user authentication mechanisms in a communication network (for example, 802.1x), using a single network element. For this purpose, the element that manages access to the communication network (for example, a router) has a new physical and logical architecture (with different databases and verification and learning mechanisms) that expands the capability of said element, such that said element incorporates an authentication system for managing and providing the mechanisms necessary for protecting communications, offering much greater protection, management and automation capabilities than those of current systems. |
