The invention relates to a pipe laying vessel comprising a pipe laying system for laying a pipem (9). The system is provided with a sawing apparatus for cutting the pipe (9). The apparatus comprises: a sawing device (3); and, a carriage (5) for supporting the sawing device (3); wherein the apparatus comprises: a mover (7) constructed and arranged for moving the carriage (5) substantially around the pipe (9); and, the sawing device comprises a bandsaw (13) constructed and arranged for creating a saw slot in the pipe (9) while being moved substantially around the pipe (9).
