PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reciprocating piston internal combustion engine.SOLUTION: A reciprocating piston internal combustion engine 1 comprises cylinders 2 each including a discharge valve 3 and a piston 5 that forms a boundary with a combustion chamber 4 on one side portion and that is disposed to be movable and reciprocate between a top dead center and a bottom dead center. In this respect, an exhaust gas line 6 is provided to be able to supply exhaust gas 7 from each combustion chamber 4 to the exhaust gas line 6 by way of the discharge valve 3. According to the invention, an exhaust gas treatment unit 8910 that includes a catalyst converter 8, a bypass line 9, and a switching device 10 is provided so as to be able to supply the exhaust gas 7 from each combustion chamber 4 to the exhaust gas line 6 alternatively by way of the catalyst converter 8 or by way of the bypass line 9.
