PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization conversion element excellent in durability against heat and light caused by the rise in brightness.SOLUTION: The polarization conversion element has an oblique vapor deposition layer made up of a dielectric, and side surfaces of the oblique vapor deposition layer are covered with a protective film. The polarization conversion element includes: a polarization beam splitter array 13 having a first light transmission member having a polarization separation layer for transmitting one of a P wave and an S wave, and reflecting the other, and a second light transmission member having a reflective layer for reflecting the other of the P wave and the S wave, reflected by the polarization separation layer, which are alternately bonded to each other, and in which the other of the P wave and the S wave incident from an incident surface is reflected to an exit surface by the reflective layer; and an inorganic half wave plate 14 selectively provided on the exit surface of the polarization beam splitter array. |
