Provided is a liquid crystal aligning agent that meets requirements as to basic characteristics such as exceptional liquid crystal alignment and electrical characteristics, as well as characteristics such as minimization of afterimages caused by prolonged AC driving, which is encountered with IPS- or FFS-driven liquid crystal display elements. This liquid crystal aligning agent contains: component (A), which is a polyamic acid ester obtained by bringing about a reaction between a diamine component that contains a diamine having the structure of formula [1], and a tetracarboxylic acid diester component having the structure of formula [2]; and component (B), which is a polyamic acid obtained by bringing about a reaction between a diamine component that contains a diamine having the structure of formula [3], and a tetracarboxylic dianhydride component containing an aromatic tetracarboxylic dianhydride.
