The invention relates to a method for operating a textile machine which is used to produce rovings (2). During a normal operation, a fiber composite (4) is supplied to at least one strengthening means of the textile machine, and a roving (2) which has a protective twist is produced from the composite fiber (4) using the strengthening means. The roving (2) is wound onto a reel (6) after leaving the strengthening means and by means of a winding device (5) arranged downstream of the strengthening means in a transport direction (T) of the roving (2). A sensor system (9) is used to monitor whether a roving (2) has been produced by the strengthening means and/or whether the roving (2) produced by the strengthening means has been wound onto the reel (6). According to the invention, if the sensor system (9) detects that the strengthening means has not produce a roving (2) or the roving (2) produced by the strengthening means has not been wound onto the reel (6), the normal operation is then interrupted; the reel (6), which has already been partly wound with a roving (2) by means of the winding device (5) before the normal operation was interrupted, is replaced with an empty reel (6) as part of a sleeve replacement process; a starting process is carried out in which a roving (2) produced by the strengthening means after the strengthening means is started up is brought into contact with the empty reel (6); and the roving (2) produced by the strengthening means after the starting process is wound onto the reel (6) and the normal operation is continued.
