PARKING ASSIST SYSTEM AND PARKING ASSIST METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a parking assist system and a parking assist method capable of providing an assistance of parking similar to parking in a parking area for which a driver is familiar with a surrounding situation to a parking area with low frequency of use.SOLUTION: A bird's-eye image containing a diagram indicating a road surface surrounding an own vehicle and the own vehicle is generated; a backing start position at which a driver starts backing the own vehicle toward a parking area and a surrounding situation of the own vehicle parked in the parking area are stored; a parking area similar to the stored surrounding situation among vacant parking areas present in a forward direction of the own vehicle is detected as a recommended parking area at a time of currently parking the own vehicle; and a superimposed image obtained by superimposing a backing start position diagram indicating a position at which the driver starts backing the own vehicle toward the recommended parking area and generated using the stored backing start position on the bird's-eye image is displayed.
