Various surgical devices and methods for facilitating distraction of adjacent vertebrae and/or insertion of an intervertebral implant material there between are disclosed. The devices include barrel having a cannula, through which a rod reciprocates. An implant chamber is located at a proximal end of the barrel for implant material loading. A distal end of the barrel has slots that allow for expansion of the distal end to distract vertebrae. In some embodiments, cams are used to expand the distal end of the barrel.
