<p>An interactive display communication device (e.g. set-top-box / STB 101) comprises audio and video data input and output means and networking means, all of which are connected to a data processing means. The data processing means is configured to compile received video data with a user interface of a browser application having a client messaging application extension, and to output composite video data including any received messages at a remote terminal 102 which may have been received from a remote user 105 via a server 110. The device is provided with remote user input means (e.g. a remote control or mobile phone) for interacting with the device in real time. The remote user input means is configured by the data processing means for interaction with the client messaging application according to at least one configuration parameter encoded in each message, such that the interface allows the user to select, view and respond to received messages in accordance with the functionality of the local input means. A method of communicating with an interactive display communication device and a display communication system are also disclosed. The device, method and system allow users of legacy audio-visual equipment, such as televisions, to receive and reply to electronic message (e.g. email) using the remote control for pre-existing equipment, wherein the user interface is adapted based upon the available functions on the remote control device.</p> |
