<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce time required for image formation while securing the life of a developing unit. <P>SOLUTION: A printer controls operation for switching a position of a developing unit in image formation on the basis of the remaining life of the developing unit (S107). Accordingly, if the remaining life of the developing unit satisfies a predetermined condition, the printer can prevent reduction in duration of service due to the drive of the developing unit by switching the position of the developing unit to a non-operation position.
