Sulphur is recovered from ores or other raw materials by first converting it into a mixture of sulphuretted hydrogen and sulphur dioxide, e.g. in the manner described in Specification 358,558, and then leading these gases, in the proportion of 4 to 7 of the first to 2 of the second, into a reaction vessel into which is sprayed a solution of alkaline or alkaline earth tetra and penta thionate. The temperature is maintained at 60 DEG C. and the deposited sulphur is removed continuously, an addition of an alcohol, such as glycerol, being beneficial. Preferably, a solution of the potassium salts is used and is prepared by passing equal volumes of sulphuretted hydrogen and sulphur dioxide into a 20 per cent solution of potash lye until the saturation point is reached, this being effected when 0,3 cubic centimetres of deci-normal iodine is required to neutralize 1 cubic centimetre of the solution.
|
