A method of adjusting the angular position of a stair lift (10, fig 1) chair (20, fig 1), pivotally mounted on a stair lift carriage 15, using a levelling motor 26. The method comprising: deriving a levelling signal form a gyroscope (27) mounted on the carriage 15, and adjusting the signal using an input derived from an accelerometer 30 mounted on the chair (20, fig 1). The adjusted signal being used to control the levelling motor 26. The method preferably including the step of limiting the effect of the accelerometer 30 signal as a function of the angular displacement of the chair (20, fig 1) from level; preferably through applying a Z-shaped transfer function to the signal. A gain, dependant on the accelerometer 30 output, may also be applied to the signal from the gyroscope (27). There is also provided an apparatus claim for a chairlift (10, fig 1) including a control system to control the levelling mechanism. |
