Moulding cellulose &c. - Plastic materials are united by interposing between their surfaces a layer of an unpolymerized or partially polymerized vinyl compound and then subjecting the layer to a polymerizing influence, whereby the vinyl compound is converted into the difficultly soluble or insoluble form. Suitable vinyl compounds include organic acid esters, e.g. vinyl acetate, propionate or phthalate; inorganic acid esters, e.g. vinyl phosphate, vinyl chloride, or bromide ; styrene; or the compounds obtained by dehalogenating vinyl halides, e.g. vinyl chloride, for example by zinc dust. They may be used alone or admixed with solvents, fillers, " effect materials," pigments, dyes, &c. They are applied in any convenient manner and the articles are then held together and polymerization carried out by sunlight, ultra-violet light, heat, or in any other suitable manner. Catalysts, e.g. uranium salts, carbon tetrachloride, benzoyl peroxide may be added to assist, polymerization, which may also be accelerated by the use of heat when other methods are used, or the process may be initiated by light and heat and completed solely by heating. If partially polymerized compounds are used, the process may be completed entirely by heating, with or without pressure. The invention is applicable to widely differing materials, e.g. ceramic material, rubber, celluloid, natural or artificial resins, &c. Suitable cellulose derivatives include esters like cellulose acetate, formate, propionate, butyrate or nitrate, or ethers such as methyl, ethyl or benzyl cellulose.</p> |
