A system for recharging the battery 56 of a towed trailer 50 comprises a trickle charge unit 54 which further comprises a switching unit 62. The switching unit 62 selectively moves between a first position where the trailer battery 56 is connected to the towing vehicle battery 66 for charging and a second position where the trailer battery 56 is isolated from the towing vehicle battery 66 and is instead supplies power to an electrical device 58 mounted on the trailer, which may be a tipper pump. The switching unit 62 may only move from its first position to its second position when actuated by a key 64 manually inserted by a user. When the key 64 is not -present, the switching unit 62 is set in its first position and the trailer battery 56 is disconnected from the tipper pump 58. This system allows the tipper pump 58 to operate irrespective of whether the vehicle ignition is on or off and prevents depletion of the vehicle battery 66. |
