A device for the selective absorption of hydrogen produced during the storage of spent nuclear fuel 2 comprises a shielded container in which are provided: (a) at least one hydrogen absorbing material; and (b) at least one hydrogen-selective filtration member. The shielded container allows the ingress of gases generated during storage and comprises a material which is adapted to substantially prevent the passage into the shielded container of radiation emitted by said spent nuclear fuel. An apparatus for the storage of spent nuclear fuel comprises a sealable vessel 1 in which the device is located. Preferably hydrogen filtration is achieved by a ceramic membrane 4, and a thin metal foil 5, such as a Pd/Au or Pd/Ag alloy. The hydrogen absorber may comprise transition metals or alloys thereof, which metals may be selected from titanium and zirconium. Nanoparticle catalytic coatings may be provided on the hydrogen absorbing transition metals. The shielded container may be formed from a metal such as lead, cast iron, carbon steel, stainless steel or copper. |
