An attenuator and an attenuating method are disclosed. The attenuator comprises an input (10) operable to receive an input signal to be attenuated and a 3-dB coupler (20) coupled with said input (10), the output (30) of the coupler providing an attenuated input signal. The attenuator further comprises a pair of reflective loads (40) coupled with said 3-dB coupler (20), each reflective load (40) comprising a first impedance network (70+80) arranged in parallel with a second impedance network (50+60), both impedance networks being connected to ground. Said first impedance network and said second impedance network comprise each an impedance device (70, 50) connected in series with a diode (80, 60). This provides for an attenuator having increased dynamic range but acceptable insertion losses. Instead a 3-dB couple, a circulator could be used. |
