A method of operating an electrochemical cell 2 and the cell itself for use in the electrolysis of water to produce ozone is described. The cell 2 comprises a first electrode and a second electrode separated by a cation exchange membrane 18, wherein the first and second electrodes 4,6 have an active surface formed from electrically conductive diamond 16. In a first mode of operation the cell 2 has a first polarity, whereby the first electrode 4 is an anode and the second electrode 6 is a cathode. The method comprising providing the electrochemical cell 2 in the first mode of operation with a supply of current to the electrodes of the first polarity for a first period of time; and providing the cell in a second mode of operation with a supply of current to the electrodes 4,6 in a second polarity, opposite to the first polarity, for a second period of time. The cleaning process can be monitored to determine the length of time required for process.
|
