The ship operating method involves driving a ship (1) by a main engine, an electric motor (2), which drives a shafting (3), coupled with a ship propeller (4). The ship has an internal combustion engine (5), particularly a gas turbine or a diesel motor. A current generator (9) produces an electrical energy for a main power supply (10). The electric motor is operated as a generator, where an energy flow (14) is produced between the main power supply and the shafting. Minimum power is supplied to control the direction and magnitude of the energy flow, which changes with respect to the direction. An independent claim is also included for a ship for accomplishing a ship operating method.
