This invention relates to the use of an active compound selected from the group comprising a sphingoid base, a sphingoid base derivative or a mixture of two or more these compounds for manufacturing a cosmetic composition suitable for topical application with animals having an at least partly fur covered skin for maintaining and/or repairing the keratoseborrheaic condition of the skin and/or fur.

A method of treating conditions of the skin and fur of a veterinary animal in need thereof, wherein the veterinary animal is a cat, a dog, a horse, or a rabbit and has at least partly fur covered skin, comprising administering by topical application to the animal a composition comprised of an active compound selected from a sphingoid base, a sphingoid base derivative or a mixture of two or more of said compounds.
