An electrochemical cell comprising a negative electrode, a positive electrode material and a separator disposed between the negative electrode and the positive electrode material, wherein the positive electrode material comprises: (i) a composite comprising an iron and fluoride containing compound, wherein the iron and fluoride containing compound is an iron oxyfluoride nanocrystallite, and wherein the iron and fluoride containing compound is an iron oxyfluoride compound of the formula FeOxF2-y, where 0<y≦1 and where 0<x≦1; and (ii) a conductive matrix comprising an ionic conductive matrix, an electronic conductive matrix or a combination thereof. |
