A liquid crystal display device according to one aspect of the present invention includes: a liquid crystal panel of a vertical alignment mode; and an optical control member disposed on a light exit side of the liquid crystal panel. The liquid crystal panel includes a plurality of pixels having at least two domains (50a, 50b) of which liquid crystal molecule director is oriented in a first direction. The absorption axis of a first polarizing plate and the absorption axis of a second polarizing plate are orthogonal to each other and form an angle of about 45° relative to the first direction. The optical control member includes a substrate, a light diffusion part, a light shield layer, and a low refractive index part. When viewed in the normal direction of the substrate, the light shield layer (40) has a planar shape that includes: a straight line section which is parallel to the absorption axis (P1, P2) of one of the first polarizing plate and the second polarizing plate; or a straight line section which forms an angle of less than 45° relative to the absorption axis (P1, P2) of the one polarizing plate. |
