In order to increase efficiency of converting light into carbon compounds, this photoelectrochemical reaction device is provided with an electrolyte, an oxidation electrode layer which is immersed in the electrolyte, a reduction electrode layer which is immersed in the electrolyte, and a photovoltaic layer which has a first surface electrically connected to the oxidation electrode layer and a second surface opposite of the first surface and electrically connected to the reduction electrode layer, and which brings about charge separation by means of the energy of the light irradiated onto the first surface or the second surface. The oxidation electrode layer and/or the reduction electrode layer has a porous structure having fine pores.
