A microphone (1) comprises a transducer (2) and a mode controller (11). The microphone has a normal operating mode (M0) and a collapse mode (M1). The mode controller (11) switches to the collapse mode (M1) when an output signal of the transducer (2) reaches or exceeds a predefined threshold value (S0) and switches to the normal operating mode (M0) when the output signal reaches or falls below a predefined further threshold value (S1). Furthermore, a method of operating the microphone (1) is provided.
