PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide compositions and methods for producing isoprenoids including squalene.SOLUTION: The invention provides genetically altered yeast having altered expression or activity of enzymes participating in squalene production, such as acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase), HMG-CoA reductase, squalene epoxidase and squalene synthase, which yeast is capable of producing isoprenoids, preferably, squalene. Also provided is a method for producing squalene using a genetically altered yeast of which one or more genes may be modified by gene repair oligonucleobases. Also provided is squalene produced by genetically altered yeast. |
