The instant disclosure relates to an apparatus, system and methods for determining the impact attenuation or hardness of a surface for a playground or sports field in order to mitigate or reduce sports and playground related injuries.

1. A method of determining the impact attenuation of a surface for a playground or sports field in order to mitigate related injuries, the method comprising the steps of:
a) allowing a user to select a location of a playground or sports field to test; b) providing the user with an impact tester, said impact tester comprising at least one accelerometer and a communication system; c) providing the user with an application to receive data from the impact tester, said application loaded on a computing device; d) instructing the user to drop the impact tester on the surface of said playground or sports field from a height to be tested; e) using the at least one accelerometer associated with said impact tester to obtain data pertaining to the impact attenuation of said surface of said playground or sports field during said drop of said impact tester; and f) allowing the communication system associated with said impact tester to transmit data pertaining to the impact attenuation of said surface of said playground or sports field back to said computing device.
