The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for setting an automatic global positioning system (GPS) receiving period, and map content according to the moving speed of a user in a navigation system using a GPS terminal. By considering the moving speed of the user, the GPS receiving period is optimized to increase power efficiency in a hardware aspect, and system load is reduced by reducing unnecessary system measuring in a software surface. In addition, by optimizing a map content request point of the user varied by the moving speed in real time and displaying the same, the convenience of the user is maximized. The method comprises the following steps: displaying map and additional information on the map to a navigation system; receiving a GPS signal; measuring moving speed of the navigation system; and reducing the amount of the additional information, when the moving speed of the navigation system is greater than and equal to the preset speed.
