[Class 2 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] An artificial leather comprises a moderately heavy web-like flexible base coated with a composition of nitro-cellulose, ethyl cellulose and a compatible vegetable oil softener selected from the group raw or slightly polymerized castor oil or soya bean oil, oxidized castor oil, oxidized soya bean oil and oxidized cotton seed oil, with or without fillers or pigments. Mixtures of these vegetable oils may be employed and other softeners such as tricresyl phosphate may be added. Fillers and pigments specified are titanium dioxide, lead titanate and carbon black. The web-like flexible base may be of cotton cloth, sateen, broken twill, fibrous felt or latex impregnated felt. Solvents such as alcohol, ethyl or butyl acetate and toluene may be used in the preparation of the coating composition. In one example, cotton broken twill cloth weighing 9 ounces per square yard is coated with 20 coats of a composition consisting of 24 parts nitro-cellulose, 20 parts ethyl cellulose, 56 parts raw castor oil, 33 parts titanium dioxide and 370 parts of a solvent containing ethyl and butyl acetates, alcohol and toluene. The coating has a dry weight of 9 ounces per square yard. The cloth is embossed at 160‹F. and 1,500 lb. per square inch for one minute to impart grain.</p> |
