[Class 108 (i).] In ambulances provided with stretcher supports operated by hydraulic apparatus and in which each support has provision for an upper and a lower stretcher the actuation of the supports is controlled by means of a valve which on lowering the supports is automatically and gradually closed to cushion the descent. The pressure fluid is pumped into the barrel 2 mounted to oscillate about trunnions 2a by a lever 5 and the ram 4 is connected to a lever 3 carried by a shaft 10 upon which the arms 9 of the stretcher support 8 is carried. When the support is raised by the pressure fluid the latter may be cut off by means of a valve 7 and lever 6 which latter is moved over as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. To lower the support the lever 6 is moved back to the full time position to open the valve and allow the pressure liquid to escape. As the support approaches its lowermost position the valve 7 is gradually closed by means of a cam surface 17a on a cam member 17 contacting with a pin 6a on the lever 6. In a modification the barrel 2 is mounted in an upright position. A catch 12 operated by a hand lever 14 and rod 13 is employed to lock the apparatus in its elevated position.
