Compound roofing-tiles. - Roofing shingles and tiles consist of a base 30 of non-metallic water-resistant material having the lower portion and edge thereof covered by a thin metallic shell 31 which has its central part 32 raised above the surface of the base to provide a space for a filling. The base may be of roofing felt, asbestos or granulated cork held together by a binder, mineral wool, infusorial earth or saw-dust impregnated with asphalt or asbestos-cement, and the shell may be of copper. The filling may be of asphalt or bitumen &c. used either alone or with granulated or fibrous materials, or it may be of cement and asbestos. The lower and side. edges of the shell are inclined as at 37, Fig. 2, and they may end flush with the corresponding edge of the base or be bent around the base, as at 35, Fig. 25. One edge of the shell extends beyond the corresponding edge of the base in the form of a tab 36 which is arranged to lie in the plane of the underside of the base and is cut away at its lower edge at 37, as in Fig. 1. The portion 33 of the shell which lies flat on the' surface of the base extends beyond the normally exposed margin of the element a sufficient distance to produce a good joint and for nailing. The flat part of the shell may be cut away, as in Fig. 1, to conserve metal. The base may be of uniform thickness throughout or its lower portion may be of increased thickness. In the case of shingles, the base has cut-outs 47 formed in its lower portion, as in Fig. 10, and the shell is provided with depressed portions 52 which enter the cut-outs 47. The metal shell may have' a rearwardly extending plate 58 which extends a considerable distance to the rear of the base, as in Fig. 8. For shingles and tiles, a cover layer 66 may be provided at the upper part of the base. as in Fig. 21, the cover layer being adapted to abut against and fix the upper part 63 of the shell. The cover layer, which may be of roofing felt or of materials similar to the filler, extends over the upper part of the base and is flush with the rear edge of the raised part of the shell. |
