<p>A hermetic container 1 is provided at its lower portion with an oil reservoir 19. A portion of oil stored in the hermetic container 1 is taken. An oil holding portion 24 is configured such that a flow of taken oil is suppressed more than a flow of oil in the oil reservoir 19. The oil holding portion 24 is provided adjacent to the lower discharge space 15b. A lower end surface of the boss 9a of a center portion of the lower bearing 9 is located at the same height as or lower than a lowermost surface of the lower valve cover 16b. According to this configuration, gas does not stay around a lower end of the drive shaft 3 which sucks oil that is utilized for lubrication and sealing in the compression mechanism. A compressor having high efficiency and high reliability is provided.</p>
