<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for heating a medium, capable of rapidly heating a medium and easily recovering used exothermic fine particles. <P>SOLUTION: The method for heating a medium includes a step of irradiating a mixture essentially comprising an exothermic fine particle and a medium with a microwave. The exothermic fine particle comprises a fine particle body and a microwave absorption group bonded to the fine particle body, and is substantially insoluble in the medium. The exothermic fine particle is preferably an exothermic fine particle obtained by reacting an organic silicon compound A represented by the following general formula (1) with silica.
