[Class 53.] Electrodes.-An accumulator grid W made of expanded metal is carried .and stiffened by metal bars B which are provided with grooves G in which the end bars of the grid engage. The grid and bars B are then connected together to form a unitary structure by arc welding or flame burning &c. These stiffening bars may be provided on one or more sides of the grid. Fig. 7 shows a grid in which the mesh is vertical, the bar B being grooved corresponding to the upper edge of the grid. In another form the mesh is arranged diagonally. When stiffening bars are not fixed to all the sides of the grid the remaining sides may be provided with an insulating frame of ebonite &c. which may consist of channelled strips which fit over grooves K in the sides of grid as shown in Fig. 3. The expanded metal may be made by slitting and stretching, or punched expanded metal may be used. Specification 324,022, [Class 53, Galvanic batteries], is referred to. |
